Meetup: DevOps in Practice

DevOps – the best of two worlds?

Our Meetup group where innovation works from jambit's subsidiary in Stuttgart dedicates the first Meetup in 2019 to the topic DevOps. But what was DevOps again? The term DevOps is an abbreviation of two well-known terms of IT and software development:

  • On the one hand, it stands for development (Dev), i.e. for the software developers themselves.
  • On the other hand, it stands for operations (Ops), i.e. for the ongoing IT operation in companies, the system architecture and system administration.

At jambit, we have been using the term DevOps as a representative for DevOps engineer for quite some time now. These employees do not just programming and developing individual software.

Our DevOps engineers are jambitees who transfer agile methods of software development to IT system architectures and their operation, scalability, automation and virtualization. Our DevOps create the right 'agile' infrastructure for our demanding software service projects.

DevOps topics – firsthand knowledge from practice

jambitee Wolfgang Kirchler, Head of Department Audi Mobility
jambitee Felix Kellner, DevOps Engineer

We will contribute two entertaining talks to the Meetup – directly from our experienced jambitees.

Keycloak Identity Provider
Dipl.-Inf. (Univ.) Wolfgang Kirchler / Head of Department Audi Mobility / Business Division Automotive Bavaria

The multitude of possible authentication mechanisms (Facebook, Google, etc.) and the associated number of identities seems limitless.

In his lecture, Wolfgang Kirchler will show us the "Keycloak", an identity provider that centralizes these seemingly innumerable authentication processes to a single sign-on, which is representing a notable simplification. This is only one capability of Keycloak – out of many others – Wolfgang will explain in his presentation.

Infrastructure tests with Kitchen
Felix Kellner / DevOps Engineer / Office Stuttgart

Any changes to configuration files or software versions should be tested automatically before rolling them out.

The language "Chef" offers the software "Kitchen" for these purposes. Kitchen can also be used by many other technologies beyond Chef and provides a Swiss pocket knife for infrastructure testing.

Using Docker, Ansible, CentOS, Ubuntu and InSpec, it will be shown how Kitchen works in practice.
