jambit CoffeeTalks II / 2020

Microservices, IT security and Star Trek

In our second CoffeeTalk this year, we present bundled knowledge in the sectors microservices, IT security and leadership. For IT users and beginners, we provide insights into the use of Scala for microservices. Techies and non-techies learn with “better understand IT security“ why IT security does not end with antivirus programs, but why it also affects the own behavior. We bring the participants in distant leadership galaxies and afterwards back down to earth with the talk “Make it so! How Star Trek can teach us something about leadership“.

The CoffeeTalks series takes places several times a year. jambitees give an idea of best practices from their projects and take up matters truly dear to their heart. Due to technical problems we are unfortunately not able to stream the talks live. We will publish the videos later on our jambit YouTube channel.

Which potential provides Scala for microservices?

1:00 - 1:45 p.m.: Christian Mang, Senior Software Architect, Business Division Banking & Insurance

Microservices are a well-known organizational and architectural approach in software development. The implementation in daily work often occurs with Java and Spring Boot. Why not? Spring Boot is commonly known and almost every backend developer had contact with it before. However, there are also very interesting and modern alternatives. During this CoffeeTalk, Christian gives us an overview about the Akka HTTP Library, the Play Framework and the Lagom Framework. He also brings up the actuators programming and shows the advantages, which result from the use of the programming language Scala. The talk provides ideas and approaches for users and beginners, who want to profit from microservices with Scala. Christian Mang is a Senior Software Architect at jambit and supports one of our customers in the finance sector to digitize the credit approval process.

Better understand IT security

2:15 - 3:00 p.m.: Michael Werner, trainee for IT application development, Competence Center Platforms & Operations

“I got a virus protection, so my IT is secure!“ Numerous technical devices and networks, but no security concept. As comprehensive the IT spread, as vague it is often for its security. Often, it does not fail due to technical reasons, but due to the approach. In his CoffeeTalk, jambitee Michael Werner provides approaches of how to increase the own IT security in private, as well as in professional environment. He also responds to terms and practical questions: What is a Defence in Depth? Which behaviors can I realize by myself in daily life? Michael Werner is a trainee for IT application development in the Competence Center Platforms & Operations and works particularly on internal projects: He ensures for example, that jambitees have a secure work environment with VPN access. He develops a jambit selfcare portal with his colleagues to make the IT infrastructure and its issues more accessible.

Make it so! How Star Trek can teach us something about leadership

3:30 - 4:30 p.m.: Daniel Benkmann, Senior Software Architect, Business Division Automotive Bavaria

Create confidence, promote individual potential, and make decisions, for which you are also responsible. That’s what Star Trek’s Captain Picard represents with his saying “Make it so!“ The contact points with the issue leadership are diverse nowadays. For example, regarding the personal development in connection with self-management, as an employee of a manager or as a head of department with staff responsibility. To explain these roles, there exist countless scientific or less scientific Governance models and concepts. Often, there is a lack of concrete support. During the CoffeeTalk, Daniel uses some famous faces as assistance: because the Star Trek characters Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway stand for an individual type of leadership and their behaviors can help to explain leadership situations for Trekkies and non-Trekkies. At jambit, Daniel works as a Senior Software Architect and Talent Facilitator, mainly in the Business Division Automotive in the sector app development. Since his childhood, he has been a Star Trek fan.
