Electromobility: A Major Opportunity, Current Challenges

Electromobility is a key component of the mobility transition. When using green electricity, it contributes to reducing emissions and is therefore an important step toward sustainable mobility. At the same time, it becomes clear in everyday use that charging electric vehicles does not yet work seamlessly.

Currently, electric vehicles still have several disadvantages. In addition to costs and limited range, these also include relatively long charging times. Moreover, especially in urban areas, the charging infrastructure is not nearly as well developed as would be required for a complete transition to electric vehicles.

Why Charging Is Not Comparable to Refueling

A key difference compared to conventional refueling quickly becomes apparent: a simple map of charging points is not sufficient. Due to longer charging times, it is not possible to “quickly” recharge. Waiting times at a charging station can last several hours, while a conventional refueling process is completed within a few minutes.

The Core Problem: Utilization Rather Than Quantity

This leads to a fundamental problem: charging stations are occupied for significantly longer periods and are at the same time far less available than conventional gas stations. The result is waiting times, uncertainty, and an overall less convenient user experience.

Further technical improvements are necessary to make electric vehicles more attractive to end customers. In addition to batteries with longer lifetimes, higher energy density, and faster charging times, the expansion of charging infrastructure must continue to be driven forward.

Why Expanding Infrastructure Alone Is Not Enough

However, even a rapid expansion alone will not be sufficient. Optimizing the utilization of existing charging stations contributes significantly to enabling the widespread adoption of electromobility.

The Often Overlooked Role of Software

This is where an often underestimated factor comes into play: software. For the entire topic of “charging electric vehicles” and its broad acceptance among the population, seamless IT integration is required.

In the next blog post, we’ll explore how software addresses these challenges and improves the charging experience.
