Lateral entry into software development: with kith and kin – and Kotlin

jambitee Elena has been working as a software engineer at jambit since January 2020. She is a newcomer in software development and to have a smooth lateral entry, she participated in the jambit academy's beginner course "Software Development in Practice" last year. The course takes place once a year and is aimed at lateral entries from technical and scientific disciplines, among others. We asked Elena what her lateral entry into software development looked like.

Hey, Elena, how did you get into software development?

Programming has fascinated me since my younger days. But after finishing high school in my home country Russia, I decided to study business administration – that was just cool in the early 2000s. After that, I worked in project management for several years and during this time I gained first experience in IT business – doing programming projects as a side job. Since my time in Germany, I have increasingly gone to Meetups. With two goals: after the birth of my son four years ago, I wanted to gain more professional input and improve my German at the same time. Two years ago, I went from Moscow to Munich. I got to know jambit through the meetup Lego for Scrum. That's how I first got to know the company as a place where programming enthusiasts come together. At the meetup, I was caught by the special "spirit", I wanted to learn more and stayed tuned.

To whom would you recommend the beginner course "Software Development in Practice" and how to prepare for it?

Software development should not only be done because it is trendy. Programming must be a passion. I recommend to everyone: try online courses and platforms and gain experience. I think the platforms hyperskill.org or hackerrank are great. The beginner course was a great offer to apply my know-how not only at my desk at home, but in a real software company. During the course, you get a good feeling for what you can expect in your daily work, because you program a mobile app for Android with Kotlin or iOS with Swift.

The course also provided a great opportunity to test my knowledge in comparison to other course participants, i.e. to reveal my weaknesses and strengths. The course also gave me the confidence and motivation to fill my knowledge gaps. A concrete tip in advance: if you are unsure whether your programming skills are sufficient for the course, jambit provides an online programming skills test.

How and why did you decide to work as a software engineer at jambit?

I came to jambit via a classic application, by the way, only several months after the beginner course. My first step was not to apply for a job, but to set up a learning plan that would gradually prepare me for the technical interview. Through the jambit academy, I knew where I still had to catch up. I looked at various companies. jambit – again – convinced me with its total package. For example, the flexible working hours, which are very important for me as a mother. And something else: the jambit spirit, which I already experienced at the meetup. I felt right at home.
