Lecture

Ruby 101
An Introduction

Since the last lecture at jambit about Ruby, some things concerning Ruby have changed:

  • Ruby has become an ISO standard
  • Version 2.0 has been announced for the next year
  • With the help of RubyMotion (among other things), Ruby has made its way into app development

This programming language and its community are still very active despite the flattened hype (Rails).

This introduction presents a basic understanding for the programming language itself and a comparison to other languages used at jambit and discusses the concepts behind Ruby.

Another goal is to open the participants' minds to a new intellectual world of programming as seen through Ruby, without attempting to replace a hands-on workshop or The Programming Week.

Ruby
Introduction

During the past 5 years, Ruby and Rails have had a tremendous impact on the server-side web development, and many others have copied the concept. But why? Ruby on Rails enables web applications to be developed within the shortest time, thereby aiming at making the developers faster and producing readable code. And furthermore, Ruby itself allows interesting concepts, e.g. internal domain-specific languages (DSL), embedded language, powerful regex patterns, etc.

This evening presentation conveys a compact overview of the Ruby ecosystem. Outlooks show further possibilities for self-study.
